Ansari was previously nominated for the award in 2016, but didn’t win. He joked, “It would have really sucked to lose two of these in a row.” He then thanked the cast and crew of Master of None, which streams on Netflix. The series is a comedy about a 30-year-old actor’s personal and work life in New York.
Earlier in 2017, Ansari also swept up two Emmys for his work on the show, including co-writing an especially empathetic and relatable episode, “Thanksgiving,” with fellow actor Lena Waithe.
Ansari referenced Waithe and his other fellow actors tonight, saying, “The only reason my acting is good in that show is because everybody else holds me up.”
