OtterBox has fixed the worst part about PopSockets

It’s a union you never could have expected. OtterBox and PopSockets announced a partnership today in the form of an OtterBox phone case with a built-in PopGrip. But wait, there’s more: the PopGrip can handle swappable PopTops, so users can customize their PopTop’s look.

The Otter + Pop, as the collaboration is called, will go on sale later this spring and fits the iPhone XS, iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus. (Notably, there’s no case for the iPhone XR, but OtterBox didn’t give a reason why.) Prices start at $59.95.

The case comes in black, blue, or mauve. The included PopTop will match the case color, but any PopTop can be swapped in its place; individual PopTops start at $8. PopSocket sells a range of designs, and users can create their own, too, through PopSockets’ website.

A real nifty feature is that the PopTop lays flush with the case when it’s not in use. That’s different from the traditional PopSocket, which juts out and aesthetically looks awkward — a frequent annoyance for PopSocket users. This team effort makes it look like actual thought went into the case.

I’m not an OtterBox or PopSocket user, but this pairing definitely makes sense and benefits both companies. There’s absolutely someone out there who would like to use both.
